Frequently asked questions

Which month is best to visit Kashmir?

April to June for tulips, green meadows and mild weather; September and October for chinar colour and fewer people. December to February if snow is the point. March and November are the cheapest months that still have usable weather. June is the busiest and priciest because of the Indian school holidays.

When should you not visit Srinagar?

July and August bring the warmest weather and some monsoon spillover, and June is the most crowded and expensive month of the year. If snow is your goal, avoid November and early December — too early to be reliable. Sonamarg is closed roughly December to early April, so any winter itinerary promising it is wrong.

How do you start planning a Kashmir trip?

Fix the month first, because it decides what is open — Sonamarg is snowbound from December to early April, and the tulip bloom lasts a few weeks in April. Then set the length: four to five nights fits the main circuit. Then choose your base, which for most people is Srinagar. Flights and hotels come last, once those three are settled.

Do Indian nationals need a permit for Kashmir?

No permit is required for Indian nationals visiting Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg. High-altitude treks such as Tarsar–Marsar do require registration and a licensed guide, arranged locally.

What is not included in a typical Kashmir package?

Most packages exclude return airfare, Gulmarg gondola tickets, local union taxis at Pahalgam and Sonamarg, pony rides, and entry tickets at ticketed gardens. Union taxi charges in particular surprise people, because they are compulsory and separate from your package vehicle.

How reliable is snow at Gulmarg?

Reliable from roughly late December through February. November and early December are a gamble. If snow is the entire reason for the trip, January and February are the safest months.
