Betaab is closer, easier and busier — it fits a half-day and most packages include it by default. Aru is twenty minutes further, noticeably quieter, and the only one of the two worth staying overnight in. If you have one afternoon, take Betaab. If you have a full day or you trek, take Aru.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pahalgam better or Gulmarg?
Neither is better — they suit different trips. Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m, 105 minutes from Srinagar, with reliable snow from late December and the gondola. Pahalgam is at 2,130 m, 150 minutes away, and offers river walks and three side valleys. Gulmarg for snow and the cable car; Pahalgam for walking and a gentler altitude. Most first-time itineraries include both.
Which is better, Gulmarg or Sonamarg?
They barely compete, because they operate in different seasons. Gulmarg is open all winter and is the snow destination. Sonamarg sits at 2,730 m on the Leh highway and is usually snowbound from December to early April; in summer it offers the Thajiwas glacier and alpine river country. If you are travelling in winter the question does not arise.
Do Indian nationals need a permit for Kashmir?
No permit is required for Indian nationals visiting Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg. High-altitude treks such as Tarsar–Marsar do require registration and a licensed guide, arranged locally.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
Usually not. Sonamarg sits on the Srinagar–Leh highway at 2,730 m and is generally closed by snow from around December to early April. Any December or January itinerary that promises Sonamarg should be questioned.
What is not included in a typical Kashmir package?
Most packages exclude return airfare, Gulmarg gondola tickets, local union taxis at Pahalgam and Sonamarg, pony rides, and entry tickets at ticketed gardens. Union taxi charges in particular surprise people, because they are compulsory and separate from your package vehicle.
Why do I need a separate local taxi at Pahalgam?
Vehicles from Srinagar are not permitted beyond Pahalgam town. Travel to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari must use local union taxis, which are charged locally and are not part of any package transfer.
