Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Srinagar or Jammu?

For a Kashmir valley holiday, Srinagar. It is the valley itself — Dal Lake, the Mughal gardens, and the base for every excursion to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Jammu is the gateway city on the plains and the traditional railhead; most travellers pass through rather than stay. Fly into Srinagar if you can.

Which month has snowfall in Kashmir?

Reliable snow at Gulmarg runs from late December through February, with January the deepest — the traditional Chillai-Kalan period ends on 31 January. November and early December are a gamble. Srinagar itself is cold from December but usually stays snow-free until late in the month.

Which is better, Gulmarg or Sonamarg?

They barely compete, because they operate in different seasons. Gulmarg is open all winter and is the snow destination. Sonamarg sits at 2,730 m on the Leh highway and is usually snowbound from December to early April; in summer it offers the Thajiwas glacier and alpine river country. If you are travelling in winter the question does not arise.

Is Sonamarg open in winter?

Usually not. Sonamarg sits on the Srinagar–Leh highway at 2,730 m and is generally closed by snow from around December to early April. Any December or January itinerary that promises Sonamarg should be questioned.

Does the Gulmarg gondola always run?

Phase 1 to Kongdoori runs in most conditions. Phase 2 to Apharwat closes in high wind and on heavy-snow mornings. Check at the Phase 1 counter on the day rather than buying a combined ticket in advance.

Do Indian nationals need a permit for Kashmir?

No permit is required for Indian nationals visiting Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg. High-altitude treks such as Tarsar–Marsar do require registration and a licensed guide, arranged locally.
