Know before you book

  • Srinagar

Houseboat quality varies enormously within the same star band — book by boat name, not category.

  • Gulmarg

Gondola Phase 2 to Apharwat closes on heavy-snow mornings and in high wind — check at the Phase 1 counter on the day, not the night before.

  • Gulmarg

Very limited dining outside hotels; plan lunch around the gondola queue.

  • Sonamarg

Closed for much of winter. A December or January itinerary that promises Sonamarg is almost certainly wrong.

  • Sonamarg

Thajiwas requires a pony or a steep walk from the road head; both are charged locally.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are sufficient to visit Kashmir?

Four to five nights for a first visit. That fits Srinagar plus the three main valleys without spending the trip in a car. Three nights forces you to drop a valley, and two is a stopover. Beyond six nights you move from the standard circuit into the quieter meadows and the treks.

Which month is best to visit Kashmir?

April to June for tulips, green meadows and mild weather; September and October for chinar colour and fewer people. December to February if snow is the point. March and November are the cheapest months that still have usable weather. June is the busiest and priciest because of the Indian school holidays.

Can I wear jeans in Kashmir?

Yes. Kashmir is relaxed about what visitors wear and jeans are completely normal. Modest dress is appreciated at religious sites such as Hazratbal and Charar-i-Sharief — covered shoulders and knees, and a scarf for women at shrines. In winter, jeans alone are not enough at Gulmarg; you want thermals underneath and waterproof outer layers.

How do you start planning a Kashmir trip?

Fix the month first, because it decides what is open — Sonamarg is snowbound from December to early April, and the tulip bloom lasts a few weeks in April. Then set the length: four to five nights fits the main circuit. Then choose your base, which for most people is Srinagar. Flights and hotels come last, once those three are settled.

How do you reach Kashmir most easily?

By air to Srinagar (SXR). Delhi has the widest frequency and most cities connect through it — 85 minutes from Delhi, about 2h 45m from Mumbai when the seasonal direct is running. The rail alternative reaches Jammu Tawi, from where it is roughly 260 km by road to Srinagar, adding the better part of a day each way.

How do you visit Kashmir by train?

Trains have long terminated at Jammu Tawi, from where Srinagar is about 260 km by road through the mountains — budget most of a day for that leg. The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla line has since extended rail towards the valley itself. Services on the newer sections have changed more than once, so check IRCTC for what is actually running on your dates rather than relying on any website, including this one.
